Royal Reminder

Posted on | April 29, 2011 | No Comments

The Royal Wedding is a great reminder that change is a constant in life. As an estate planner, I wonder if William and Kate have updated their wills? I’m sure the Royal Couple has counsel on it as I type.

So when should you update your estate plan?

As I  instruct my clients – you should have your estate plan reviewed by an attorney or other estate planning professional periodically to assure that it still meets your needs. Also, you should have your plan reviewed if any of the following occur:

a. The marriage, divorce, illness or incapacity of you or of any member of your immediate family.

b. The death of any member of your immediate family.

c. A significant change in your financial condition (positive or negative).

d. You move to another state or country.

e. The receipt of a large gift or inheritance.

f. You acquire property which requires special consideration and handling.

g. You change your mind about how to dispose of your property and/or who you want as your representative.

Finally, you should have your plan reviewed if there is a significant change in the tax laws which may affect your estate.

When is the last time you reviewed your will?  Is it time for an update?  Perhaps a Royal Reminder.

The Numbers

Few people realize that when I founded The Wright Firm, LLP, our chief focus was estate planning and probate (E&P). It remains my area of interest, and over the years I have come to encounter many issues ancillary to E&P that concern seniors.

So why a blog on senior law issues? The numbers of course!

The AARP estimates Medicare will gain 7,000 potential recipients a day in 2011, totaling more than 2.5 million over this year. In fact, it is estimated that over the next twenty (20) years more than seventy million Americans will reach the age sixty-five (65).

My hope is that this blog will become a resource for seniors, family members and attorneys.
